Code of practice for demolition (Revision of SS 557:2010)
OVERVIEW
This standard provides requirements and recommendations of good and safe practices for demolition works. The key changes in this revision include:
– expanding the scope to cover a wider range of structure types, demolition methods, and site conditions.
– expanding the demolition methods to include high-reach machines and water-jet techniques.
– strengthening safety and technical aspects through clearer definition of roles and responsibilities of the professional engineer, competent person, and demolition contractor, ensuring they possess appropriate qualifications and training.
– introducing requirements for structural appraisal reports, exclusion and safe working zones, and debris and waste handling.
– new guidance for the demolition of special structures such as prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) (steel and concrete), mass engineered timber and marine structures, and addresses additional hazards associated with prestressed materials.
Users of the standard include construction and demolition companies, engineers, contractors, consultants, IHLs and relevant government agencies.
