SS 495:2022
Specification for impact attenuation of surface systems under and around playground equipment
OVERVIEW
This standard specifies requirements for the surface systems to be used in children's playgrounds and areas where impact attenuation is necessary. It provides test methods by which impact attenuation can be determined, and sets out performance requirements and test methods to evaluate playground impact attenuating surfaces. These test results could be used to reduce injury frequency and severity or help the owner purchaser of a surfacing system in evaluating whether there can be better performance or increased functional longevity of the installed surface.
This standard also provides performance requirements related to poured-in-place/wet pour/cast-in-situ surfacing systems with test methods that can be performed providing reproducible comparisons of data in the laboratory or the field. There are also additional and optional tests pertaining to the bond of the rubber granules within the surface, cracks and gaps occurring on the surface, as well as slip resistance and ease of ignition.
